BANGKOK, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Thailand is actively preparing cultural celebrations for the Lunar New Year to boost national tourism demand and solidify its position as a leading global destination for Lunar New Year celebrations, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced on Thursday.

At a press conference, the TAT announced that the flagship event will be held in the capital, while celebrations will also take place in various provinces, leveraging the shared cultural heritage of Thailand and China to promote meaningful tourism and long-term value.

TAT Governor Thapani Chiapapur said that starting Saturday, decorative lights themed "Riding the Waves, Sharing the Future" will illuminate the bustling Yaowarat Road, creating a festive atmosphere in Bangkok's Chinatown.

Tappani said the main Lunar New Year celebrations will kick off on February 14 at the Siam Paragon shopping mall, featuring a Thai-Chinese joint celebration ceremony.

She added that the event will also include a large lantern exhibition and cultural performances by four top Chinese art troupes, as well as Thai-Chinese cultural workshops such as lantern making, calligraphy, paper cutting, Khon mask painting, and embroidery.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAK) stated in a press release that it expects tourist arrivals in the Southeast Asian nation to increase by 3% year-on-year during the peak Lunar New Year travel season from February 13th to 22nd, with an estimated 1.25 million foreign tourists and 2.3 million domestic tourists.

The agency estimates total tourism revenue will reach 42.23 billion baht (approximately US$1.33 billion), a 13% increase compared to the same period last year, highlighting the strategic role of major festivals in advancing Thailand's quality-oriented tourism agenda.
